Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, often referred to as sleeve gastrectomy or simply sleeve, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to assist with weight loss.
During this 30-45 minute surgery, a large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a sleeve-like structure. The result is a reduced stomach capacity, leading to decreased food intake and decreased levels of Ghrelin, a hunger-promoting hormone.

Few surgeries for weight loss offer such high benefits and lower overall risk of gastric sleeve surgery. Although all patients experience weight loss differently, most sleeve patients lose up to 50-70% of their excess weight within the first 1-2 years after surgery.

Even more, most sleeve surgery patients not only have significant long term weight loss outcomes but life-changing improvements in their diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

During surgery, five 0.5 cm incisions are made to remove almost 60-80% of your stomach, kickstarting your exciting weight loss journey.

Unlike band surgery, there is no foreign material left behind, and unlike a bypass, no new connections are made between your stomach and intestines.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

If you have struggled with weight loss, have a BMI >30 and are interested in timely, on-demand surgery, private weight loss surgery may be right for you. Surgery is not covered by OHIP but individual private plans may provide some coverage. Customized, on-demand care is why patients seek a private surgery option.

Please note:

Publicly covered OHIP is available in Ontario if you meet certain clinical criteria. The MyLife Bariatrics team will happily guide you toward public surgery channels if you qualify and are interested.

Gastric sleeve surgery is covered by OHIP if:

  1. Your BMI is more than or equal to a BMI of 60
  2. You have a significant amount of scarring within your abdomen that is prohibitive for undergoing a gastric bypass operation.
  3. Finally, you have a medical condition that makes performing a Gastric Bypass operation unsafe or clinically not recommended for you.

If you are interested in OHIP covered bariatric surgery, please discuss this with your family doctor who will send a referral to the Ontario Bariatric Network.

Out-of-Province patients

Join MyLife at Grand Genesis and experience  Out of Province Surgery. We will see you via a Zoom meeting, ensure that you are optimized for surgery and book your surgery date. We recommend a three-day stay in the area. All post-surgery follow-ups can be done remotely. We are here to facilitate every step in this process.

The Procedure

The laparoscopic approach involves making small incisions in the abdomen, through which a laparoscope (a tiny camera) and surgical instruments are inserted. The surgeon carefully removes a large portion of the stomach, leaving a narrow “sleeve” or tube-like structure. This procedure reduces the stomach’s capacity, limiting the amount of food it can hold.

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy or “the sleeve” is performed in roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour including your time under general anesthesia. You are completely asleep for the procedure.

Recovery

The procedure is performed as a day procedure and after a monitored period in our recovery room you are safely discharged once you are tolerating some fluid intake by mouth and your pain is more than manageable.

Over the next few days, you slowly increase your fluid intake and manage your mild pain and nausea, if any, with our comprehensive script of medications. We encourage you to be mobile, up and about every day, and ready to connect with us for our check-in appointments.

Regular check-ins from Dr. Hong, Ramji and Doumouras in partnership with our dietitian, Dr. Ellie Aghdasi will get you quickly on track after surgery, guiding you through dietary adjustments and lifestyle changes crucial to help you maintain your weight loss results.

Possible Complications

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is a safe, reliable and effective procedure. All surgical procedure carry risks and MyLife Surgeons will detail these for you in your pre-operative appointment. Complications can include bleeding, infection, or leakage at the staple line. Our experienced clinical team is well-equipped to manage and minimize these risks.
