What is Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

Compared to other parts of the body Abdominal fat may prove to be more stubborn and less responsive to diet and exercise. The problem can worsen as a result of pregnancy, massive weight loss and ageing.
A tummy tuck, also known as Abdominoplasty, is a body contouring procedure in which the apron of excess fat and loose skin around the abdomen is removed with an incisionand, when needed, muscles in the abdominal wall are tightened for a flatter more toned abdomen. Abdominoplasty is usually offered as an individual procedure, however, it can be combined with other body lifting procedures.

Who is a good candidate?

• You are a good candidate for tummy tuck if:
• Your weight loss has been stabilized
• You have relatively large areas of loose skin and/or sagging fat around waist and belly
• You are not planning to conceive in the future
• You are otherwise healthy and do not have a serious illness or medical condition that may impair the healing
• You are a Non-smoker or can abstain from smoking for at least three weeks before and after the surgery
• You have a positive outlook, with a clear and realistic vision of what you want the procedure do for you
• You are willing to keep up with a healthy life style to keep the results of your procedure last long.

Abdominoplasty should not replace diet and exercise in your attempts to lose weight. It is recommended that you get within 15 lbs of your ideal weight “before” the surgery. Losing a significant amount of weight after a tummy tuck may compromise the outcome of the surgery.

Procedure

Tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia. It takes between two to four hours to complete. There are two major methods for this procedure:

Full/Complete Abdominoplasty in which lose skin and extra fat above and under your belly button is removed and the belly button is repositioned in your skin.If needed the abdominal muscle is tightened with stiches. The incision is a half-moon shape as close to the pubic mound as possible. Length of the incision depends on the mass of the skin and fat that needs to be removed.
Partial/Mini Abdominoplasty treats the area under the belly button and the belly button itself is not touched. Typically the muscles are not treated in the mini Abdominoplasty, and the length of the incision may be shorter than it is in full Abdominoplasty.
Talk to your plastic surgeon to find out which of these two methods are suited for you.

Recovery

After your procedure Small, thin tubes may be placed through tiny incisions below the main incision site to drain any excess blood or fluid. Dressings or bandages may be applied to your incision and you may be asked to wear a compression garment or binder for 4-6 weeks. This minimizes swelling and helps to avoid fluid buildup and supports your abdomen as it heals following surgery.
Your recovery time will depend on several factors, including the type and extent of your Abdominoplasty, your age, health, and body weight. But typically the patient may return to work within two to four weeks. More strenuous activities may be resumed after approximately four to six weeks if sanctioned by the surgeon after re-evaluation.
Swellings will disappear in a matter of weeks and resolve completely in a few months. Scars are normal and should fade and flatten anywhere from three months to one year after surgery.

Possible complications

Though infrequent, complications may include. Fluid retention or excessive loss of blood and fluids, Accumulation of blood and/or fluids under the skin(Hematoma and Seroma), infection, reaction to anesthesia medications, pulmonary embolism (a blood clot that travels to the lung), scarring (keloids), damage to underlying structures, or the need for a second reversionary operation Persistent pain.
Hematoma and Seroma may require intervention to drain the blood or serum that is accumulated under the skin. There may be complications with the healing of the wound after surgery which may be exacerbated for smokers.

An abdominoplasty is actually just a process that permeates your abdomen. This treatment is called a tummy tuck. It’s a significant operation, therefore it’s very necessary to thoroughly analyze your situation to prepare your self, and go at your own pace coming at your choice that is last. A tummy tuck ought to be the very final resource and also the process shouldn’t be applied as an alternative.

    Wondering about cost and payments

    • GRAND GENESIS PLASTIC SURGERY September 9, 2020 at 5:48 pm - Reply

      Hi Audrey,
The cost of simple Tummy Tuck is CAD 7000, but if you need more than simple Tummy Tuck, like 360 or liposuction on other areas, or skin tightening, … it can go up to $12,000.
As for the payment, we collect the whole amount in advance, but we do have a support plan with the collaboration of our bank through which candidates can apply for financial support.
